He is the free surgeon of a city that could not pay him, and he has never, he is certain, been kinder. Across four short parts, The Surgeon, The Island, The Multitude and The Sail, he narrates his life as one long act of charity: the poor healed for nothing, the island made a haven, the sanctuary that refuses no one. The pleasure of these tales, and their horror, is reading past him, seeing what his mercy costs a page before he cannot.
This is quiet literary horror in the register of The Remains of the Day and We Need to Talk About Kevin: one unreliable voice, no adventure, no rescue. The tales share a world with The Printer's Apprentice, and grey-coated figures from that story wait patiently at the edges. He is never punished. That is the point. Begin with The Surgeon.
