This site is run by John Nairn, an independent author based in Australia. The short version: the only personal information I ask for is your email address, I use it to send you stories and news about my books, I don't sell or share it, and you can leave at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email.

What I collect
If you join the newsletter: your email address, your first name if you choose to give one, and — if you tell me — which of the worlds you want to hear about. My newsletter provider also records the date, time and IP address of your sign-up. That record exists so I can show, if I'm ever asked, that you asked to be on the list.
If you just read the site: nothing that identifies you. This site runs no analytics, no tracking pixels and no advertising, and sets no cookies of its own. The web host records standard server information such as IP addresses for security and delivery purposes.
Why I collect it
Only to send you the newsletter — the free weekly short stories, news about new releases, and worldbuilding for The Forge, The Knowledge and The Black. If you tell me which worlds interest you, I use that to send you more of what you came for and less of what you didn't. That's the whole purpose.
Who else handles it
I use a small number of outside services to run this site. They only ever receive what they need to do their job, and they aren't permitted to use your information for their own purposes.
- Kit (kit.com) — stores the mailing list and sends the emails. Kit is based in the United States, so joining the list means your email address is stored overseas.
- GitHub Pages — hosts these web pages. GitHub is based in the United States.
I write under two names — John Nairn for fantasy and science fiction, John D Nairn for the Bondi mysteries — and both lists are kept in the same Kit account, tagged separately. You'll only receive the newsletter you signed up for.
I never sell, rent or trade your email address, and I never hand the list to another author or a promotion service.
How long I keep it
Your email address stays on the list until you unsubscribe or ask me to delete it. When you unsubscribe, Kit keeps a minimal record that you unsubscribed — that's what stops you being accidentally re-added later.
Your choices
Every email I send carries an unsubscribe link at the bottom. One click, no questions, and it takes effect immediately.
You can also email me at john@johnnairn.com to ask what information I hold about you, to correct it, or to have it deleted entirely. I'll action it and write back.
Children
These books are written for adults, and the newsletter isn't directed at children. I don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.
Changes, and complaints
If this policy changes, the updated version appears on this page with a new date at the top. If a change materially affects how I use your information, I'll say so in the newsletter rather than quietly editing the page.
If you're unhappy with how I've handled your information, please email me first — most things are a misunderstanding I can fix the same day. If that doesn't resolve it, Australian readers can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
