The compendium

The Forge, explained: how the world works, what the classes are, and what a BOB actually is.

  • The World of the Forge — The shared world behind the Forge books
  • The Village We Built — Set in The World of the Forge — a cluster of worlds run on a divine economy, where belief makes gods and every class is a bargain someone pays for. This is where it starts: the first eight books of The Demon Yield, a twenty-six-book saga in three arcs, and the Forge's cornerstone. Here is what's ours.
  • The fragments — The Forge is not one world but many, lying alongside each other, and the rules are not the same in all of them — which is a thing almost nobody living in one of them ever finds out.
  • A class — A class is a god's gift and a god's bargain: real, particular ability, handed over by a named god with reasons of its own — and it can be refused, and it can go cold.
  • BOB — A BOB is a companion that lives inside a follower's own head: made once by the god who took them on, one to a person, and speaking in that god's voice for the rest of their life.
  • The Interface, and what a level means — In some of these worlds a reading arrives with a number on it — a creature's level, a class's, a party's — and the number is a rough warning rather than a rule anyone is shown the working for.
  • How the gods work — The gods here are real, numerous and hungry: they live on what people freely give them, they can do only as much as that allows — and a god whose believers run out does not linger.
  • Reaching a god — Where you stand when you ask changes what the asking costs — which is why this world is covered in very small holy places, and why the large ones are worth fighting over.
